Duties of Christian Fellowship : A Manual for Church Members

Duties of Christian Fellowship by John Owen is a concise yet powerful guide to church life, offering biblical wisdom on how believers should relate to one another and their spiritual leaders. Originally published in 1647 under the title Eshcol, this work reflects Owen’s deep pastoral care and his desire to see churches marked by love, unity, and faithfulness.

The book is divided into two key sections:

  • Seven rules for fellowship with pastors – emphasizing the congregation’s duty to support, respect, and pray for their leaders.
  • Fifteen rules for fellowship with fellow believers – encouraging patience, humility, and selfless love within the church community.

Though the subject matter is weighty, Owen’s writing is clear and to the point, with each rule explained in just a few pages. His structured approach makes this book both practical and easy to engage with, whether for personal reflection or group discussion.

At its core, Duties of Christian Fellowship is rooted in a simple but profound truth: love for God should shape the way believers live in fellowship with one another. Owen consistently points his readers back to Christ as the foundation of a healthy, united church.

This updated edition preserves Owen’s timeless wisdom while making it more accessible to modern readers. Perfect for individual study, group Bible discussions, or adult Sunday school classes, Duties of Christian Fellowship remains an invaluable resource for those seeking to deepen their commitment to biblical community.

About the Author : John Owen (1616-1683)

John Owen was one of the most influential theologians and pastors of the seventeenth century, known for his sharp intellect, deep pastoral care, and lasting impact on Reformed theology. Amidst political turmoil and personal hardship, he remained unwavering in his devotion to biblical truth and the church. His role in drafting the Savoy Declaration (1658) helped shape the beliefs of Congregationalist churches and continues to do so for many congregations today.

A strong advocate for religious freedom, Owen had notable sympathy for the Baptists of his time, urging unity among believers despite theological differences. He was a prolific writer, producing around eight million words on theology, Christian living, and the work of the Holy Spirit. His Communion with God remains one of his most treasured works, offering profound insights into the believer’s relationship with the Trinity.

Although highly learned, Owen wrote with a heart for ordinary Christians, ensuring that his sermons and books always pointed back to the supremacy and glory of Jesus Christ.
