Duties of Christian Fellowship : A Manual for Church Members

A timeless and practical guide to meaningful church life, Duties of Christian Fellowship by John Owen provides a biblical framework for Christian relationships within the local church. First published in 1647 under the title Eshcol, this short but profound work reflects Owen’s deep pastoral concern for fostering love, unity, and faithfulness among believers.

Divided into two sections, Duties of Christian Fellowship outlines:

Seven rules for walking in fellowship with respect to the pastor of the congregation – addressing the congregation’s responsibility to honor and support their spiritual leaders.

Fifteen rules for walking in fellowship with respect to other believers – guiding Christians in their interactions with one another, cultivating patience, humility, and mutual care.

Despite covering significant responsibilities, Owen’s writing remains accessible—each rule is presented in just a few pages, making it ideal for both personal devotion and group study. His characteristic clarity and brevity help readers engage with profound biblical truths in a structured and manageable way.

At the heart of Duties of Christian Fellowship is a simple yet powerful principle: love for God and love for fellow believers. Owen consistently grounds his teaching in the nature and character of God, as revealed in Christ, the true Shepherd of His people. His insights flow from a deep understanding of Scripture and a pastor’s heart for nurturing a faithful, united church.

This edition, updated for modern readers, retains Owen’s wisdom while enhancing its accessibility. Whether used for individual meditation, group Bible studies, or adult Sunday school classes, Duties of Christian Fellowship remains a vital resource for Christians seeking to grow in grace and strengthen their commitment to the local church.

About the Author : John Owen (1616-1683)

John Owen was a leading theologian and pastor of the seventeenth century, known for his theological brilliance, pastoral heart, and enduring influence on Reformed theology. Living through political upheaval and personal loss, he remained steadfast in his commitment to biblical truth and the church. Owen’s influence is maybe best displayed in his pivotal role in the writing of the Savoy Declaration (1658), presenting the beliefs of independent / congregationalist churches at the time and has been a foundational document for congregationalist churches ever since.

A key figure in the English Reformation, Owen supported religious freedom and had notable sympathy for the Baptists of his time, advocating for unity among true believers despite theological differences. He wrote extensively—publishing around eight million words—on theology, Christian living, and the work of the Holy Spirit. His Communion with God remains a classic on the believer’s relationship with the Trinity.

Despite his scholarly brilliance, Owen’s works were often sermons intended for ordinary Christians and would always place the glory of Jesus Christ at the front and center of whichever matter they were addressing.
