    Born at Elstow near Bedford, in 1628, John Bunyan served in Parliament’s Army as a teenager in the English Civil War. After a prolonged period of spiritual conviction and conflict, as recorded in Grace Abounding, he found deliverance and peace with God, and entered a congregation in Bedford. Bunyan began preaching in 1655 until 1660, where he was brought before a Bedfordshire magistrate and detained in prison for twelve years.

    About the Author

    John Bunyan was a tinker in Bedford who was converted through the ministry of a small Nonconformist congregation and became one of the most gifted preachers of seventeenth-century England. He spent twelve years in Bedford jail for preaching without a license, and it was during his imprisonment that he wrote Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, the account of his own spiritual pilgrimage. The Pilgrim’s Progress, published in 1678, is among the most widely read books in the English language — an allegory that has carried the gospel into homes, schools, and churches across many centuries and cultures.
