About the Author

John Owen was among the most learned and prolific of the English Puritan divines. He served as Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University under the Commonwealth and preached before Parliament, exercising considerable theological and political influence during the 1650s. After the Restoration he lived in London as a Nonconformist, continuing to write the major theological and biblical works — including his extensive commentary on Hebrews and his treatment of communion with God — that secured his reputation as a theologian of the first rank. He held to congregational polity and was a significant influence on early Particular Baptists.
